Tsunami – World Business Pledge Week

December 29 2004. Marina del Rey, California.

A worldwide call to all business owners is going out from a small California company to help tsunami relief efforts. “Please join me in standing with courage behind the survivors by giving 25% of gross revenue for one week,” pleas Julian Kalmar of Marina del Rey.

To the survivors, he says, “You are not alone. We hear your cries and we’re coming.”

“I’m calling on every self-respecting business owner to reach into their heart and pocket to give to their brothers and sisters in this most desperate time. All I ask is your pledge for one week. Will you join me?”

While Julian is giving until January 31st, he’s asking every company to commit to the following pledge: “We will give 25% of the company’s gross revenue for the next week to the tsunami victims in Asia.

“If every business-person of character steps forwards, $170 billion (USD) will be raised. The small sacrifice is probably tax-deductible.”

He recommends choosing major charitable organizations such as the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, or the UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees).

“I personally can’t comprehend the scale of the misery inflicted in Asia. If I imagine the loss of one dear family member multiplied a hundred thousand times, I think I’m just scratching the surface.”

After losing his home in the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake, Julian identifies with earthquake victims. “Though people were killed in my neighborhood, what’s going on in Asia is thousands of times worse. My heart goes out to the poor survivors who’ve lost so many loved ones.”

Remarkable is Julian’s personal courage and willingness to take a stand. He’s been flat on his back for almost 3 years with a back injury. Full of hope, he’s determined to get his own life back and help as many people as he can along the way.

“I’ve dedicated my time to helping others find happiness even though I’m stuck in bed,” says Julian. “If businesses around the world will stand with me, we’ll all be closer and better off for it.”

Update (5 January, 2005): Doctor's Without Borders has requested that any funds you send them should be directed towards their general Emergency Relief Fund rather than the tsunami-specific fund because they have received sufficient funding for their "emergency" tsunami efforts. Keep in mind that Doctors Without Borders focuses on emergency help rather than on long-term relief. However, they remind everyone that tsunami aid is still very much needed, so please give freely to other organizations supporting long-term recovery. They also remind us that there are many serious humanitarian crises in the world that need our attention, and they encourage donations to support their work in over 70 other countries. Please see the following article for details: Shakeup: Doctors Without Borders Tells Tsunami Donors to Give to Other International Relief Efforts
